War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Head Quarters, Second Corps Army of the Potomac near Petersburg, Va., Oct. 20, 1864", in part: "…I sent my maiden vote to father the night before last…it is needless for me to say that it is for Abraham Lincoln, the man who is to be the President of these United States for another four years…there is not the least doubt here in the army, but that will be the result of the approaching election…citizen employees and new recruits are generally in favor of McClellan while the veterans are…generally for "Old Abe". It cannot be that these citizens who are getting large salaries are anxious to have the war ended…through fear of being drafted…the new recruits are anxious to have McClellan elected in order that peace may be declared and they may get those large bounties without fighting for them…there are some persons here that persist in believing that such is the case. There is glorious news from Sheridan…it is reported that he has once more whipped the enemy [at Winchester] capturing over forty pieces of artillery and any quantity of ambulances and wagons, prisoners etc. I hope it may prove true. There has been considerable firing on the line for the last three of four days…the discharges are very rapid and in such volleys. One man was wounded two or three days ago by a piece of shell. The wound though severe was not considered dangerous. Important movements are daily expected…all are confident that the reelection of Lincoln will virtually end the rebellion…I hope that one more year will settle it…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
