War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Hd. Qrs., Second Corps Army of the Potomac near Petersburg, Va., Nov. 2, 1864", in part: "…the first one came to hand while we were in bivouac not far from the Yellow Tavern on the Weldon R. R. We left our camp here at Deserted House…having in that time passed through a pretty sharp action and had a pretty rough time generally…in regard to my vote I suppose that it would have been better if I had been registered as a voter, but it does not seem absolutely necessary. All that is necessary…is for some householders to make affidavit that I am a resident of the place and they are bound to receive the ballot the same as if I had been registered…that is the way I understand the law as I read it a few days since…the camp was full of rumors yesterday in regard to Gen. Hancock resigning commanding the Corps. There is several different stories about it. One to the effect that he is to assume command of the defences of Washington, his wound disabling him from active service…another is that he is to organize a Veteran Corps for Regts. here in the field and still another that he is to take command of Butler's Department…it seems to be certain…that he is to leave the old Second Corps which by the way is not the "Old Second Corps" of one year ago. The places of the old fighting veterans whose time has since expired has been filled by nearly worthless substitutes…George S. Youngs." The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
