War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Provost Guard Headquarters, Second Corps near Petersburg, Va., Nov. 16, 1864", in part: "…I was busily engaged all day in tearing down our chimney in the end of our "Shabang" and rebuilding it…we are expecting to move almost everyday…it was expected that Gen. Hancock would leave here on Wednesday…but he still here and is uncertain…when he will go. He has had several farewell serenades and is likely to be the recipient of several more…I am glad the ballot went all right. I should have been glad to send a dry-good-box full of the same kind had it been in my power to do so legally…Gen. Butler with some troops from the 5th Corps had gone to New York to remain until after the election…the Regt. is to be permanently consolidated into four companies.
