War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Provost Guard Headquarters, Second Corps near Petersburg, Va., Nov. 28, 1864", in part: "…General Hancock has left us "Hancock the pride of the Second Corps." His aides and chief of staff went with him. General Humphreys has ben assigned to the command of the corps in his stead. Hancock left Saturday evening and before going he paid the guard what we consider a quiet compliment. The guard was drawn up to salute him as he came out of the gate and lifting his hat in return he came up in front of the guard and said he regretted leaving, but duty called him to another post. He said that the guard had always done well and that he had rather go into action with us than the best thousand undisciplined men in the army…there [has been] more cannonading than usual yesterday…our Thanksgiving dinner came on the 25th having been delayed by the storm…we did not forget to be thankful to the good people of N. Y…and I felt more like fighting for such a country than I have in some time past…we shall be obliged to…move some three miles to the left of the Weldon R. R. The first Division moved up near there last night…our Corps is to exchange places with the Ninth Corps. We do not fancy the performance at all, but our likes and dislikes don't amount to much in military matters…why don't the Army of the Potomac move. That question will probably be solved soon. Some troops were moved from the extreme right to the left yesterday and the Johnnies will probably be stirred up in that direction ere long…I must close, eat my "grub" and return to the Guard House immediate…Geo. S. Youngs, Provost Guad, Hd. Qrs., Second Corps." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor spotting, else VG.
