War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Provost Guard Hd. Qrs., Second Corps near Hatcher's Run, Va., Feb. 15, 1865", in part: "…the lines of the army have bee extended to the left during the past week, a distance of three or four miles. This move necessitated a permanent movement of our whole corps, Hd. Qrs. included. The movement commenced on Sunday morning the 5th inst. A part of the Second and Third Divisions of our Corps were engaged during the day, quite heavily late in the afternoon. Temporary breastworks had been hastily constructed by those divisions and some three regiments were still without cover when the Rebels attacked. Three times they charged in a desperate attempt to break our lines and each time they were repulsed with loss. The musketry was heavier…than any I have heard since early in the summer. Firing was kept up…after dark…Hd. Qrs. had been put up…in a field bordering on Hatcher's Run and when the firing commenced the Gen. [Humphreys] rode out and it is said was in the thickest of the fight. The guard was left in the same field and were not under fire. That night a junction was formed with the 5th Corps, who were out still farther to the left…on Monday they swung round on the Rebel right and had quite a fight and were broken and driven back to our works just on the opposite side of the Run. A part of the 6th Corps was sent to their support and a part of our third Division was started just at dark, but were not needed …the next day it stormed all day…there was some fighting on our left, Gregg's Cavalry being engaged but it amounted to very little…Geo. S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
