War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Provost Guard Hd. Qrs., Second Corps near Hatcher's Run, Va., Feb. 25, 1865", in part: "…you need never be apprehensive that I am either killed, wounded or a prisoners because you do not hear from me for if either of these accidents should happen to me you would be very likely to hear of it soon after…the 5th Corps and our own which was made houseless by the recent extension of the line have again built excellent quarters…a branch of Grant's R. R. has been laid from the Yellow House to this place which is the present terminus of the road and will probably be called Humphrey's Station. A platform for the reception of commissary and Quartermasters stores is nearly completed and the whole thing will be in working order in the course of a day or two. Gen. Humphreys went home on the 15th inst. on a short leave of absence and a very short one it proved for he returned last night…I think Ethel Lynas War Poetry is very good indeed…more than that…her poem entitled "the Third Army" [is] full as much truth as poetry . It is a large army and is being constantly reinforced. Many of a poor fellow will be drafted to serve in its ranks before this cruel was is over. I am guard today…desertions from the rebel army are increasing. The numbers coming into our corps per day will average a dozen…those who came in today…remarked that he had only been in the service three months and "hadn't never shot a shoot at us yet." His grammar is equal to my handwriting…Geo. S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG. 300-500
