War-date Union soldier's letter, 5 1/4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Hd. Qrs., 2nd Corps near Hatcher's Run, Va., Mar. 4, 1865", in part: "…the number of deserters from Lee is increasing as Sheridan advances. Wednesday night twenty two came in to these Hd. Qrs. Thursday night there were nineteen, but only two have come in as yet…all of them tell the same story as to scant rations, probable early downfall of the Rebellion etc..they all agree that troops have been sent south from Lee's Army. An attack on some part of our lines is not considered improbable…there are a great many officers in the army just like the Col. you mention…his conduct would be justified by the regulations. It would be well if all such men as he was connected [to] Negro Regts…Geo. S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
