War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Provost Guard Hd. Qrs., Second Corps near Hatcher's Run, Va., Mar. 12, 1865", in part: "…there is nothing but the old story…of reviews, inspections, executions…two deserters of the 1st Division…were shot to death a week ago last Friday. One of them was killed by the first volley, but the others were unfortunate[ly]…not killed until three volleys had been fired. Last Friday another deserter belonging to the same division and Corps was hung. Another one had been sentenced to suffer the same fate, but was reprieved. The 5th and 6th Corps were reviewed on different days of last week. The 2nd and 3rd Divisions of our Corps were also reviewed. Those Divisions were reviewed yesterday by Gen. Meade. Gen. Grant was also present…the weather was splendid and the display was very fine. It may be that…these reviews [will] lead the Johnnies to suppose that Grant has a large force massed in this vicinity…there is no indication of a move in this direction. The weather has been such…as to render the movement of a large force met to impossible…active operations will be resumed much earlier than were last spring…no one believes that such a terrible campaign as that of last spring and summer can be fought this year. Still there is no doubt that a terrible battle or series of battles will soon take place…Geo. S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
