War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Provost Guard Hd. Qrs., Second Corps near Burkesville Junction, Va., Apr. 24, 1865", in part: "…I feel that the preservation of my life…through the dangers and vicissitudes of the past three years is owing to God's merciful answer to the prayers of my mother and other members of the family…yesterday the 6th Corps moved out…and took the road to Danville. Three batteries of artillery belonging to our Corps accompanied them. All the ammunition in our trains was turned over to that Corps…a fresh supply was received from City Point for our Corps today. The 6th Corps was also accompany by three companies of the 50th [New York] Engineers…Albert Wheat…informed us that he and the entire Engineer Brigade were en route for Danville…large numbers of citizens and soldiers come in daily and take the oath of allegiance and draw rations from the commissary…the contrabands who come in…is still greater and we have a great deal of sport with them. We have a pair of boxing gloves, the property of the guards, and we have all the younger men and boys…engaged in sparing. Their performance…furnishes amusement for the whole Hd. Qrs. Some of them are very reluctant to engage in the sport but the boys generally succeed in convincing them that it is part of the formalities necessary…before they can draw rations…Geo. S. Youngs."
