War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Provost Guard Hd. Qrs., Second Corps near Burkesville Junction, Va., Apr. 30, 1865", in part: "…on Thursday…a telegram was received at these Hd. Qrs. stating the Booth had been discovered and refusing to surrender himself was shot by some of Col. Baker's forces. The news has since been confirmed. On Friday a telegram was received…stating that Gen. Johnston had surrendered his army to Gen. Grant. The dispatch was read to the troops and received with hearty cheers…no confirmation of this dispatch has yet been received…the publication of Gen. Sherman's "peace memorandum" has occasioned a great deal of surprise and mortification to everybody here…his most enthusiastic admirers forgetting in a moment all his past achievements [and] mention his name only in connection with the most opprobrious epithets. So completely can one act on the part of a great general change the opinions and regards of the soldiers. If by means of Sherman's armistice Jeff Davis and his cabinet escape our forces will never be forgiven, at least, by the soldiers …Geo. S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included.
