War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Provost Guard Hd. Qrs., Second Corps Baileys Cross Roads, Va., May 17, 1865", in part: "…we left Burkesville on…May 2nd. Marched five or six miles and bivouacked…Hd. Qrs. were made at a house…the roads were in excellent condition…we reached Manchester on the morning of the 5th…the Corps moved through Richmond…we followed in rear of the Corps. We did not arrive in Richmond until about noon. We crossed the river (James) on pontoons just above Libby Prison. We marched down past that famous or infamous prison and Castle Thunder, through the burnt district, up past the State House handout of the city on the Charlottesville Pike. The city is much larger and finer than I had supposed. The 24th Corps was drawn up along the line of march within the city to receive us…there were but few white people in the street, but the colored population were out in force with cold water for the thirsty soldiers. Hd. Qrs. were about five miles out from the city that night. On Wednesday afternoon we passed through Fredericksburg and crossed the Rappahannock. There are but few buildings public or private that do not bear marks of the battle fought there. Thursday,,,we were visited by one of the severest storms…the roaring of the thunder was almost…incessant…I was on guard and exposed to the storm…on…the 13th inst our camp is…about five miles from Alexandria…there is every prospect of our remaining here until we are mustered out of the service…G. S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
