War-date Union soldier's letter, 5 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Camp Chase", Arlington Heights, Va, [n. d., but ca. November 26, 1862], in part: "…we are again in the accursed state of Virginia as barren and desolate here as it is at Harpers Ferry. I was somewhat disappointed at receiving your letter without the money or cloths…we left Chicago Monday afternoon…and arrived at Toledo at five in the morning where we changed cars…we got supper at the expense of the Pittsburg ladies relief association. This is the second time we have eat there. After a song by our glee club our chaplain made a short speech…he also spoke of the censure which has been cast upon the regiment which he said was entirely undeserved to discourage the men, but he said the noble 126th would still do its duty. My opinion which accords with a good many other people is that the noble 126th don't amount to shucks and never will…at Altoona…this is the place where we were so well treated when we passed through before. The citizens brought us…cakes, apples and other things. I with four or five others was invited to the house of lady…where we had all we could eat…this time there was no such welcome…the people have sent in a bill of ninety six dollars to the regiment that we stole stuff to that amount as we passed through. We have got an awful name here and in Chicago for stealing and burning. They have got the same note about us here that they had in Chicago. They say all the government has to do if they wish Richmond is to put our regiment within seven miles of the city and we would steal it…we took the cars for Washington. This makes only three times we have passed through this splendid city since we have been soldiering…it is quite cold we have had to sleep out on the ground without even tents to cover us…our tents are old condemned ones…the wind blows…through it. There was another one of our Co. taken with the smallpox …the whole Co. are coming down with it…George S. Youngs." An original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
