Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "On Picket at Yates Ford five miles from Camp, Jan. 10, 1863", in part: "…day before yesterday two regts of our brigade moved over to Centreville with the 11 Mass. Battery and one other battery…the 111th and 39th were the [N. Y.] regts to go…the 111th came here but a few days ago. They have been at Alexandria since we left Arlington Heights. I suppose the body of [John A.] Troutman [died of congestion of the bowels] of Co. I, has reached Waterloo…he died after being in the hospital…half an hour. There is a great many dying in the regt…we have a new brigadier Gen. whose name is [Alexander] Hays. He has already assumed the command. We now hail as the third brigade, Casey's division reserve corps…Rosecrans has achieved another brilliant victory…that means, I suppose, that he has been whipped…the newspapers [say] whenever our army has the good luck to capture two or three stray rebels…it is a signal victory…if the rebels…achieve a great victory and rout of forces then its a masterly retreat…the New York Tribune reported that Co. A of the 126th were at the battle of Fredericksburg giving a list of the killed and wounded…they must have traveled…some dark night when we were all asleep…I suppose you saw the remark in the papers which the newspaper reporter or Burnside…made to this effect, "it may never be known how near we were to a great and decisive victory"…the boys who are unable to speak aloud…and others were really sick or pretended to be have been put into the ambulance corps…Sandy Platt our 2nd Lieut….was telling some…of a fellow…he was playing crazy for a discharge. He takes fish pole and line and go right out before the officer's tents and pretend to fish. Finally he got his discharge and then he told them that was what he was fishing for. Ever since if the boys see anyone lame of deaf or unable to speak above a whisper they say he is fishing. Our first lieut. [Frederick Stewart] has resigned. Our second has taken his place and Mart Stanton [WIA Morton's Ford, Va., 2/6/64; Wilderness, Va. 5/6/64 and MWIA Petersburg 6/16/64]…is now second lieutenant…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
