A good war-date Ohio soldier's letter, on patriotic stationery, 4pp. 8vo., written by a member of the 45th Ohio Vols., Danville, KY, Feb. 24, 1863, in part: "…I heard that the rebels had got between Danville & Lexington…the rebels were in two miles of Richmond. We have got our horses at last. We got a part of them last Monday…80 men were started to Lexington with some prisoners & to fetch the rest of the horses. We marched…to Lexington (36 miles) in about a day & 1/2but the horses were not all there & we had to sat till Saturday…we got he[re] the same evening but found the camp almost deserted. The regt were nearly all gone…on a scout after some rebels that was reported having invaded the state. They took ten days rations…they left Friday…yesterday morning some more started on a scout. I…had gone on picket…I have just been helping to water & feed the horses…where I was on picket we stayed in Lincoln Co. & had our horses in Boile Co…we were in one end of a church & [the] horses in the other end. Col. Hill [Lt. Col. Joseph Hill] told me to take possession of the church. It had no benches in it & we thought it was cold to leave our horses out all night…I sent Jesse a valentine. I think[it] will suit him first rate, but don't let him find out that I sent it…I got a letter from John…he is Camp Ohio in D. C. He has not got to the regt yet. I saw Oll & Dave the other day when I was at Lexington. Dave is pretty hearty…but I am afraid will never be able for serving. Oll was just about the some…his jaws were both puffed up with the mumps. He is as low spirited as ever. Dave is as hearty & lively as cricket…J. P." VG
