A good war-date ca. 1863 field printed Union version of the poem, 1p. 4to., entitled: "Who Wouldn't Be A Soldier?" or "A Letter Home" especially worked for members of the Army of the Cumberland at the time commanded by General William S. Rosecrans. Formatted into two columns of text, the poem, reads, in very small part: "At my post I am standing…with a gun in my hand I stand thus alone…with my cartridge box on filled with powder and lead I…peep out in the darkness to see the rebel spies…then I "right shoulder shift" and to camp we return…on our banners, true victory we'll always inscribe wherever the Cumberland Army shall go…the "Butternuts" find us too much for their metal when brave Rosy moves on they are sure to "skedaddle"…keep up your courage, till rebellion is crushed. Remember dear Charlotte (added manuscript pencil) "our cause it is just". The above are my thoughts and I send them to thee from your ever true Lawrence added manuscript pencil) now in old Tennessee. From a Piatt Zouaves (54th Ohio) letter collection. VG
