Bound Volume of “51 Issues of the field printed newspaper, “Soldier’s Letter: SECOND COLORADO CAVALRY”, Volume 1, Issue 1, August 6, 1864 through Volume 1 Issue 50, November 28, 1865, published at Kansas City and Fort Riley, Kansas. the handy size, 7-1/2” x 9-1/2”, four pages, four columns with pages 1, 2, and 4 were printed, but page 3 was blank for individual soldiers to write letters home. The Second Colorado Cavalry, organized in 1863 and stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, served also from Kansas City, Independence, Westport, Hickman's Mills, Pleasant Hill, and Harrisonville, Missouri. Its detachments engaged in almost constant fighting around central Missouri. Commanded by Colonel James Ford, the regiment was charged with protecting the Kansas citizens from guerillas. The newspapers provide war reports, regimental news, poetry, and articles. ... Pasted into the bound volume is the discharge document for William F. Newkirk who was a member of Colorado 2nd Cavalry, Company H. There are several other Newkirk family documents.
