Union Sailor’s letter written and signed by James West, USS Ladona, Off Charleston, June 14th/63, 4pp., VG. In part, “From what I heard at Port Royal, from which place we have just returned, we are likely to have changes in all the higher officers of the squadron, - Admiral Foote is coming down here, and the general impression is, that we shall have much more lively times in consequence. ...Since the attack on Charleston DuPont’s star has been decidedly on the wane ... I heard indeed on board the flagship, that DuPont asked to be relieved, providing anyone else who took his place would pledge himself to take Charleston. ...” plus, original cover with a beautiful “U.S. Ship” cancelation and perfect “Philadelphia June 1863” postmark.
