War-date Union home front letter written by the father of Lieut. Frank B. James, Co. I, 52nd Ohio Vols., 6pp. 8vo., Cincinnati, Oh., Dec. 30, 1863, in part: "…you have had a hard time on that march to & from Knoxville…a part of the suffering might have been avoided by greater…attention to duty somewhere in the supply department or in the commander. It may be that your march directly from a field of battle prevented all provisions either of food, clothing or trains…messengers could have been sent to Chatt'ga & clothing…obtained in spite of Guerrillas or Raiders. Col. [Daniel] McCook [WMIA Kennesaw Mountain, Ga., 6/27/64] showed your Uncle Charley the photograph of one of the men after the return & told him a part of the story, but it did not impress me…it [is] nothing to boast of except by the men who bore it so well. Your Cousin Trudge's gift remained in the Am. Exp. Office a month awaiting the opening of communications…proposed sending it by Ed Neff whose General Tillson has gone to Knoxville…I opened it added a curious little double candlestick which your mother got at the Sanitary Fair…shall direct to you 52nd OVI, 2 Div., 3 Brig., 14 A. C., Chattanooga…Uncle Charley's removal to Washington City. He has been considering the matter for 6 months & was…decided by an interview with Thos. Ewing (the greatest lawyer in the state)…offered your uncle strong personal inducements to go…Ed Neff…told us how much pleasure it would give him to have you near him…he had better exert himself to have you appointed on Genl. Tillson's staff…Father." More on his son's prospects of being promoted. VG
