War-date Union home front letter written by the father of Lieut. Frank B. James, Co. I, 52nd Ohio Vols., 4pp. 4to., Cincinnati, Oh., Feb. 22, 1864, in part: "…I saw Mr. Anderson in the street this morning…he is well now & promised me to see the Prov. Marshall about recruits for your Compy. You remember that I said…that the Traitors would have to use the negroes against us as an offset to our use of them. I observe they have ordered to recruit or impress…a certain number of thousands of them for fortification & hospital service promising freedom to the families of those who volunteer…it would go very hard with them…this last remark reminds me of your proposition about majority in Col'd. Regt. The more I reflect on the matter, the less averse I feel to it, either on general principles or for reasons personal to yourself. I think the exemption from picket & guard duty a full offset to the increased danger of the service…but as our losses have been greatly more from disease than from shot we need to rate it too high…David A. James."
