Letter Signed “S.P Chase” 2pp., on Treasury Department letterhead, January 2, 1864, to the San Francisco Collector, VG. In part, “I have received your letter ... application of Messrs Stevens, Baker of your city for relief on a bond given ... for forty tons of coal ... the parties now allege that they were unable to produce the required certificate ... I cannot regret that under the circumstances, the amount involved is so small that its payment will not be onerous.” VG.
