Strong Union soldier’s letter, from the 54th NYV simply signed “AB”, 2pp., July 12, 1864, VG. In part, “... we have been on an expedition to James Island and was in one severe battle. the shot and shell flew thick ... we lost five of one hundred men. One man was shot through the lungs ... I heard the bullet going through him. ... the balls whistled around my ears real terrible ... I was struck in the leg by a piece of brimestone ... We were on the center of James Island when the Rebels charged on Hatch’s battery ... The 55th Mass Regt is camped close by us. They are a colored regiment and they have the best band I ever heard ...’
