HATCH, John Porter (1822 - 1901) was commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers Sept. 28, 1861, commanded a cavalry brigade at Annapolis, Md.; At South mountain, Sept. 14, 1862, he was so severely injured as to be disabled until the following February. Autograph Letter Signed “Jno. P. Hatch, Brig. Gen. Comdg,” to Colonel Davis, July 1, 1864, 1pp., VG. In part, You will commence embarking your command including the 144th NY at 4:30PM. We will try and sail precisely at sunset.” he then designates the assignments per the four ships.
