War-date Manuscript Document Signedy by 1st Lieut. David A. Weed Co. B 6th New York Heavy Artillery, 4pp. folio, Pocahontas, Virginia, May 25, 1865, and records the units "Regimental History" from his enlistment through his muster out at the end of the war. It reads in small part: "...I enlisted as a private in company 'B' on the 20th day of August 1862...and was mustered into the U.S. Service by Captain Edgerton...as the 135th N.Y. State Volunteers...the Regiment was transferred by the War Department into Heavy Artillery and was called the Sixth New York Heavy Artillery...went to Gettysburg thence from there to the South Mountain as the Johnny Reb Cavalry were making a raid on there under old Stuart for the purpose of capturing horses in which he very well succeeded...marched to Fort McHenry where we first commenced to drill on the big guns, and it is about the only chance we ever had...went in camp on Maryland Heights, we lay in camp in that vicinity until the 31st day of June 1863 when we joined the Army of the Potomac, and went to Williamsport at the time of Bob Lee's crossing the Potomac....was in the battle of Mine Run...on the sixth day of May was in the fight at the Wilderness and marched and fought with the Army of the Potomac all the way to Petersburg...I was promoted to be a sergeant on the 31st day of August 1864...got marching orders and started for Harper's Ferry, we arrived there and was ordered to guard supply trains to and from the front of the Army of the Valley, and was in the battle of Cedar Creek...on the 20th day of Nov. 1864 I received a commission as a 2d Lieut. in the Sixth New York Heavy Arty. and was mustered as such and assigned to Co. 'I' 6th N.Y. Arty where I had command most of the time whilst in the company...got marching orders from the Valley...to the Army of the James, then stationed at Bermuda Front, between James and Appomattox Rivers...was on the front line and done picket duty while there I received a commission as a 1st Lieut...and assigned to Co. 'B' where I am at present. Was engaged in the evacuation of Richmond and Petersburg and the Surrender of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia...at the present time are doing duty in the town of Pocahontas near City of Petersburg. The Company has been in the different mentioned engagements viz: Whapping Heights Va, July 23, 1863, Mine Run Dec 4/1863, Wilderness May 6, 1864, Laurel Hill May 12, 1864, Po River May 14, 1864, Harris' Farm May 19th, 1864, North Anna River May 23, 1864, Bethesda Church May 30, 1864, Cold Harbor June 5, 1864, charge before Petersburg June 18, 1864, Petersburg Burnside Mine July 30/64, Cedar Creek Oct. 19, 1864, Attack on Picket line at Bermuda Hundred Jan. 22, 1865, and several other attacks on the picket line was engaged at the evacuation of Richmond and Petersburg on the 2nd and 3rd day of April 1865. I have now been in the service of the U.S. since the 20th day of August 1862 up to the present date May 25/1865...I have never been absent sick from my Company nor any detached service nor away from any other cause whatever, and have been in every engagement that the company has been in, and never as yet have received a wound or scratch, & I think I am but one out of fifty that has been in the U.S. Service that length of time...Written by 1st Lieut. D.A. Weed Co. 'B' 6th N.Y. H. Arty." Small repairs, else VG. A nice period account of the actions of the 6th New York Heavy Artillery, by one of its most dependable officers.
