JOHN W. GEARY (1819-1873) postmaster of San Francisco in 1849, Kansas Territorial governor in 1856, Union colonel who helped raise the 28th and 147th Pennsylvania Infantry regiments who was severely wounded during the battle of Cedar Mountain, Va., Aug. 9, 1862. His son died in his arms during the battle of Wauhatchie, Tenn. and he was appointed brevet major general after Sherman's March to the Sea. Later Governor of Pennsylvania. A good postwar Union general's A. L. S. "Jno. w. Geary", as Pennsylvania governor, on Pennsylvania Executive Chamber stationery, Harrisburg., Pa., May 5, 1870 addressed to Secretary Frank B. Shalters declining an invitation to serve as on the executive committee of Berks County's Agricultural and Horticultural Society and promises to attend their event in September. A newspaper clipping of the Berks County Agricultural Society is attached to the verso.
