seated in his sergeant’s uniform 3 1/4” x 4 1/4” Image housed within a brown leather case with a interior metal frame and ornate purple fabric. ... plus, a Manuscript Document Signed by two officers in the 8th Maine Volunteers. One page, 7 7/8” x 8 1/2”. Augusta Maine. January 25, 1866. The letter reads “To all Whom it may concern We the undersigned Commissioned Officers Eight Regt. Maine Vols. Do hereby take pleasure in recommending Sergt. Daniel Cooley Co “F’ 8th Maine Vols. To all who may employ him in an capacity. He is an honest sober and steady young man, and has been connected with our Regiment since Augst 20, 1861 and during that ime has proven himself a worth and just young man and we take pleasure in thus recommending him Wm. M McArthur, Col Comdg. 8 Maine Vols. Edmund G. Murry 1st Lieutenant Co F 8th Maine Vol.” ... plus a American flag patch bearing thirteen stars and thirteen stripes.2 3/4” x 2”. Daniel Cooley, a resident of South Berwick, enlisted in the Union Army in September of 1861 as a private at the age of 23. He was mustered into “F” Company of the ME 8th Infantry and re-enlisted in February of 1864. Promoted to 1st Sergeant in 1865, Cooley was mustered out in January of 1866. William Miltimore McArthur entered into the Maine Volunteers as a Captain and was wounded at Petersburg on 1864. He was Brevetted a Major General in March of 1865 and went on to serve in both the Maine Legislature and Senate following the war. Edmund G. Murry enlisted as a Corporal in the Maine Volunteers in 1861 and rose to the rank of fist lieutenant before being mustered out in January of 1866.
