Charles Henry Tompkins (1830-1915). Union Army colonel, later breveted Brigadier General who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fairfax Court House in 1861. This was the first time a Union officer would receive the award. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln was awarded the grade of brevet brigadier general. He continued his service to the military after the Civil War was over. Signed Photograph, “Chas. H. Tompkins,” 4 1/4" x 5 1/2". In an early, period oval frame. Inscribed and signed on verso; "For my old and esteemed friend Capt. Watson Freeman, Chas. H. Tompkins, Bvt. Brig. General, U.S. Army. March 9, 1898". Fine.
