Lieut John Julius Pringle Alston (1836-1863) This native of Charleston, South Carolina served his state and country as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st South Carolina Artillery. An illness, specifically fever overcame him, finally causing his death on September 20, 1863 in Greenville, South Carolina. A very nice wooden cheroot case, 3-1/2” x 7” x 1” two joining pieces, with “Julius Alston” profoundly carved in the bottom piece., VG. ... plus, Hand tinted, studio image in 3/4 standing view, full uniform with kepi on the table beside him. No backmark, pencil identification of the verso. There is a 1963 letter from a relative identifying the case.
