Hayden & Whilden regulation officer's sword sold by the military wholesale firm of Hayden & Whilden, Charleston, South Carolina. Hayden & Whilden were military outfitters, jewelers and silversmiths who operated in Charleston from 1855-1863. In 1863, the partnership of Hayden and Whilden ended when William G. Whilden became a lieutenant in the elite Confederate Washington Artillery stationed in Charleston, South Carolina. Confederate regulation foot officer's sword with original black leather scabbard, missing drag, a thirty-one inch unadorned blade with fuller comes to a spear point. Brass guard pierced with floral motif, plain brass pommel. Leather-wrapped handle with wire wrapping. Leather covered wood scabbard with brass bands and carrying rings. An old museum paper label attached to the scabbard inscribed: "Possibly Used By the Rebel Lieut. Jenkins of Rebel troops raised near Edisto, SC, procured from Charleston, SC by Wm. H. Case U.S.A." We have located only one Union soldiers who could have "captured" this sword. He is Musician William H. Case 149th New York and as part of the Army of the Cumberland they marched through the region during the time Charleston fell during Sherman march through South Carolina. As for Lieut. Jenkins we have done hours of research and believe he is 2nd Lieut. John M. Jenkins who helped raise, from Charleston and her surrounding sea islands, Co. I, 3rd South Carolina Cavalry. He is the only Jenkins we can definitively trace to having been credited with raising troop in the Edisto region and we strongly believe he is our man.
