Diaries kept by Joseph Truman of Phoenixville, PA. Truman was born in England in November 1805. Diariy entries date from May 1855 - April 1883. One diary is hard bound, with loss of spine, disbound pages, clear writing. The other is unbound, with no cover, clear writing. Many entries pertaining to day to day life, much related to religion (He might have been a part time preacher). There is good content regarding the Civil War, and Presidents, in part: Nov. 4, 1856 "Presidential election James Buchanan elected"….Oct. 4, 1860 "Republican mass meeting in Phoenixville"….Oct. 9, 1860 "State election Andrew Curtain elected Governor"….April 15,1861 "Great excitement Fort Sumpter fired on last Friday the 12th"….April 18, 1861 "Went to Philadelphia could not get only $10 from saving funds owing to the war excitement"….April 27, 1861 "Phoenix Company rose the flag stars and stripes on the rail mill"….April 13, 1862 "Thanksgiving service for the victory over the rebels at Pittsburg Landing Tennessee"….May 29, 1863 "Fair Hill work stopped owing rebels invading Pennsylvania"….May 16, 1864 "At work in the afternoon for James Gadsby, President Lincoln came to Philadelphia to see the fair"….Aug. 4, 1864 "A fact day by proclamation of President Lincoln by request of Congress for humiliation and prayer"….Sept. 11, 1864 "Thanksgiving day for victory at Atlanta and Mobile"….Nov. 8, 1864 "Presidential election Abraham Lincoln reelected"….April 3, 1865 "Richmond evacuated and taken"….April 9, 1865 "Thanksgiving for victory and taking Richmond, Lee surrendered to U.S. Grant"….April 15, 1865 "Rejoicing turned into mourning by the news if A. Lincoln President of the U.S. being shot last night"….April 19, 1865 "A general holiday for President Lincoln funeral, preaching by B. Steinman"….April 22, 1865 "President Lincoln funeral arrived in Philadelphia and stayed till the 24th….".
