Currier & Ives Print, New York, 1864, "The Old Bull Dog on the Right Track" 18” x 13-1/2,” VG. This election cartoon measures George McClellan's military failures against the successes of Ulysses S. Grant. At right Grant, portrayed as a bulldog sits on the tracks of the "Weldon Railroad," a Confederate supply route. He looks to incumbent President Abraham Lincoln and boasts, "I'm bound to take it." Grant is referring to Richmond, here represented by a doghouse, in which cowers Confederate president Jefferson Davis, flanked by generals Lee and Beauregard.
