Group of Spanish-American War heroes letter group includes: CLARK, Charles Edgar (1843-1922) He served aboard the USS Ossippee, West Gulf Blockading Squadron in 1863-65; at the Battle of Mobile Bay and the capture of Fort Morgan, August 1864; on the USS Vanderbilt, Pacific Squadron, 1865-67; commanded the USS Ranger, 1883-86; comanded the USS Mohican, 1893-94; the USS Montgomery, 1896-98; and the battleship USS Oregon during a cruise from San Francisco to Key West and then in the battle of Santiago (Spanish-American War) on July 3, 1898. For emminent and conspicuous conduct in this battle he was advanced six numbers in rank. He was raised seven numbers in rank and promoted to Rear Admiral, June 16, 1902. He then served as Governor, the Naval Home, Philadelphia, 1901-04, an President of the Naval Examining and Retiring Board, 1904-05. He retired from active duty on August 10, 1905. Mills” Superintendent ofthe United States Military Academy at Wes Point, 3p. octavo on West Point letterhead. Mounted, else VG. General Mills was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions at Santiago, Cuba for gallantry in encouraging those near him by his bravery and coolness after being shot through the head and entirely without sight...plus; Autograph Letter Signed “F.V. Greene” 3p. octavo, November 26, 1899, sending autographs. Fine. Major General Greene accepted the Spanish surrender at Manila and hoisted the flag over them on July 4, 1898....plus; FISKE, Bradley Allen (1854-1942) He received appointment from Ohio to the United States Naval Academy on 24 September 1870 and graudated in the class of June 1874. He was promoted to Commander, 7 March 1903; Captain, 28 August 1907; Rear Admiral, 3 August 1911; and placed on the retired list, 13 June 1916. Typed Letter Signed “Bradley A. Fiske” 1p. quarto, June 17, 1925, on his letterhead, in part: “As Chairman of the Association for the erection in Washington of the Navy and Marine Memorial, I am asking you to pledge a contribution...” Mounted, else VG. With signed Navy Marine Memorial Association certificate for Bronze Memorial Panel. Also VG...plus; Autograph Letter Signed of Edward E. Capehart, 3p. octavo, December 2, [c.1898], Flagship New York, in part: “We have received telegraphic orders to proceed to Havana at once...I do not believe our stay will be very protracted, but have an idea we are to go there and brign Admiral Sampson North...” Showthrough, and mounted. With cover. About VG. Capehart captured the ‘prize’ Pedro of Bilboa, in April, 1898.
