Group of autographs of Spanish-American Generals, all mounted with images and information on the general, includes: KING, Charles (1844-1933) His military career began during the Civil War when, as a teenager, he served as a mounted orderly for the Iron Brigade under his father, Brigadier General Rufus King of the Wisconsin Volunteers. In 1898, during the Spanish American War, King was re-commissioned as Brigadier General of Volunteers. In 1899, he was in Manila to assist in the Spanish surrender of the Philippines and the Insurrection that followed. Signed card “Very truly yours Charles King Capt. U.S.A. July 12, 90” VG....plus; Autograph of Hamilton S. Hawkins, hero of the famous charge at San Juan “H.S. Hawkins Major General Vols. West Point N.Y. Nov. 16 1898”...plus; GRANT, Frederick D. (1850-1912) Son of U.S. Grant. Graduating from West Point in 1871, he served as an aide-de-camp to Lt. Gen. Philip Sheridan. He participated in exploration expeditions to the Yellowstone area and the Black Hills, and fought in the 1878 Bannock Indian War. After taking leave of the Army to travel abroad whit his parents, and to serve as a secretary to his dying father, he returned to the Army at the onset of the Spanish-American War. Promoted Brigadier General, he commanded the district of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and fought in the Philippines. Autograph “F.D. Grant Septe. 30th 1887”...plus; FUNSTON, Frederick (1865-1917) U.S. Major General assisted in secruing the Philippines. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, February 14, 1900, for most distinguished gallantry in action at Rio Grande de la Pampanga, April 27, 1899, when Colonel, 20th Kansas Infantry, in crossing the river on a raft and by his skill and daring enabling the General Commanding to carry the enemy’s entrenched position on the north bank of the river and drive him with great loss from the important strategic position of Calumpit. Bates fought throughout the Span-Am War....plus; Autograph Letter Signed of WILLIAM AUMAN, 2p. octavo, sending photographs of a reunion at Antietam. He was a Brigadier general during the Span Am War. Photograhs included....plus; AMES, Adelbert (1835-1933) Civil War general and MOH winner. He served as General during the Span-Am War. “Adelbert Ames” on card...plus; Autograph Letter Signed of Brigadier General Thomas McArthur Anderson who commanded the vanguard of the U.S. expeditionary force (Eighth Army Corps) in the Philippines. His troops left San Francisco on May 25, 1898 and arrived in Cavite on June 1. Once Anderson's troops had arrived, U.S. forces laid seige to Manila, but only when General Arthur MacArthur's forces reached the Philippines in late July did the land war begin. Anderson led a division of 8,500 men against the Spaniards, unaware that Admiral Dewey and General Merritt had made a deal with the Spanish commander of Manila, Fermín Jáudenes y Alvarez to surrender soon after the fighting started. He relinquished the city to U.S. forces, purposely excluding Aguinaldo and Philippine nationalists. He writes “When war was declared against Spain, I was Colonel of the 14th INft. & commanding a District in Alask. Was made Brig. Genl. Vols May 4th 1898, Commanded first expedition to teh Philippines. Landed there June 30th, 1898. Commanded the land forces in the taking of Manila under Genl. Merritt. Made Major Genl. Vols Aug. 13th 1898. Commanded the 1st Division 8th Army Corps until Mar 18, 1899. Made Brig. Genl. Regular Army Mar. 31st 1899. Thomas M. Anderson” with card signed “Thomas M. Anderson Brig. Genl. U.S.A. Maj. Genl. Vol.” ...plus; YOUNG, Samuel M.B. (1840-1924) Civil War hero who during the Spanish-American War, was appointed Brig. General and Major General of Volunteers (1898). He was in command of the 2nd Brigade of the Cavalry Division at the battle of San Juan Hill (1 July 1898), and of a campaign in northern Luzon, Philipine Islands (1889). After the war he was appointed Brig General, USA (1900) and Major General (1901). Autographed card “S.B.M. Young Brig. Gen. Comdg. 2d Cav. Brig. In front of Santiago de Cuba.” ...plus; WILSON, James Harrison (1837-1925)General who served in the Civil War and Span-Am War. “J.H. Wilson”...plus; WADE, James F. (1843-1921) Served 46 years in the service. Major General. “J.F. Wade Major Genl. Vols”...plus; Autograph Letter Signed and card signed by Major General Samuel S. Sumner, who commanded cavalry at San Juan Hill. Card is signed “Samuel S. Sumner Major Genl. of Vols. Col. 6th U.S. Cavalry.” Letter is addressed to GeneralWesley Merritt’s wife...plus; MacARTHUR, Arthur (1845-1912) Gen. Arthur MacArthur was the father of Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Raised in Wisconsin, he served with the 24th Wisconsin Volunteers in the Civil War and fought in many Western campaigns and in the Chattanooga campaign of 1863. He received the Medal of Honor for gallantry. Joining the regular army after the war, he fought in both Cuba and the Philippines in the Spanish-American War and was (1900–1901) military governor of the Philippines.
