A great anti-Benjamin Butler printed "Absolute Money" satirical banknote. Green printed one thousand dollar bill being an anti-Greenback Party, a political party who proposed printing more paper currency in order to combat the desire to trade in specie known as "ABSOLUTE MONEY for the sum of ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS." The bill is flanked on either side by vignettes of financial despair. On the left a Uncle Sam drives the US mint over a cliff into the hands of the Devil while on the right a raggedly dressed Uncle Sam turns out his pockets showing that they are empty. The bill itself has some very imaginative statements, including, in part: "Swindlerville Avenue, Washington, City, July 24, 1880…A mortgage on all property in the United State…Redeemable nowhere, in nothing, and by nobody…when this note has been spent, another may be had upon application at the U. S. Treasury…Full tender for Debts, public and private. Death to any man who refuses to give us more credit…Eternal damnation to any man who refuses to take this bill at par for all debts…B. F. Butler Gen'l Distributer…". The verso is equally amusing with much more derogatory financial content. Archival tape repair on centerline fold on verso, else VG
