Large Engraving, uncolored, matted and framed, 18’ x 23-1/2’ (sight). The black enamel painted frame shows chipping; the engraving appears fine. The engraving was published by Leon Cogniet, New York, c1839. This handsome print of Washington from the first half of the nineteenth century, highlighting the fashion in American culture for images of George Washington. During his life and following his death, Washington was elevated to national symbol, and his image graced every possible object from water jugs to neckerchiefs. Prints showing Washington were issued during his life-time and pretty much continuously throughout the nineteenth century. This is one of most impressive full-figure engravings produced. Léon Cogniet (1794-1880) was a French painter of the Romantic school who specialized in portraits and historical subjects. Like many historical painters, his works were issued as engravings for sale to the general public. In fact, that was the case here. It was published by Jean Nicolas Laugier in 1839. George Washington Parke Custis, step-grandson and adopted son of the General, considered this work as very well done. The painter may have been inspired to chose this subject in light of the decisive role played by French forces.
