Book Set, “Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant”, by U.S. Grant, New York, Charles L. Webster & Co., 1885, Two volumes; octavo 584; 647, [+1, errata] pp. Frontisportait of Grant in both volumes with tissue guard. Set is illustrated with forty-three maps, one of which is a large folding map, and two steel engravings. Tipped-in facsimile letters in Grant's handwriting including the Lee surrender. Publisher's deluxe binding of half morocco over gilt-ruled cloth decorated with gilt medallions on front and back boards, six-paneled gilt-tooled spine and marbled edges. near fine. Written during the final days of Grant's life (he was dying from cancer), his memoirs provide a personal and poignant record of some of the most important events in American history. Charles L. Webster & Company, a publisher co-owned by Twain and his niece's husband, published Grant's Memoirs in 1885, shortly after Grant's death. Twain sent salesmen all over the country to sell the work, which was offered as a two-volume set with a choice of three bindings. Many of the salesmen were Civil War veterans. They wore their army uniforms to create sympathy for Grant, who had died just days after finishing his manuscript.
