Bvt. Maj. Gen. Rutherford B. Hayes, Col. 23rd OVI. Severely wounded at South Mountain, successively a brigade and division commander in the Shenandoah, Hayes' bravery earned him a brevet for Fishers Hill and Cedar Creek. Hayes went on to be the 19th President of the United States. On the verso, in pencil, it reads "H.P. Shutt of the color guard Co. g 23 OVI". Pencil ID on the recto, most probably in Shutt's hand. Shutt served in the 23rd Ohio under the command of Hayes. The piece also has the date "Nov. 13, 1863". The image most likely belong to him. The CDV has some light age, else fine. We know of a similar pose, which sold in Cowans April 2014 military sale, lot #125, which realized $4,100.00. A truly rare Civil War image.
