United States marshal’s Document Signed by George J. Crump (1841-1928) A lawyer and Confederate veteran of the Civil War, he served as an officer in the 16th Arkansas Infantry. Crump was involved in politics, and in the Brooks-Baxter War and later became an Arkansas legislator in the House and Senate. From 1893-1897, he served as a U.S. Marshal in Fort Smith, Arkansas for the Western District. This document is 2pp. folio, September 10, 1896, being a claim by John Barnwell “for 20 days’ service as posse comitatus, from Aug 10th to Sept 3 1896” and his employment of Sid Johnston in arressting several outlaws , including Seaborn Perryman, David Roberts, Frank Duncan, Ben Porter, Ben Grayson, and Frank Delaney. Signed by Barnwell and Johnston. Fine condition. The Brooks–Baxter War was an armed conflict in Little Rock, Arkansas, in the United States, in 1874 between factions of the Republican Party over the disputed 1872 election for governor. It came at the end of a long and often violent struggle between white Republicans resident in the state before the War, known as scalawags, and newer arrivals called carpetbaggers, over power in the state government during Reconstruction after the Civil War.
