GREENE, Francis Vinton (1850-1921) soldier, historian, and engineer. He graduated West Point in 1870. In 1872 Greene was assigned to the Corps of Engineers. While serving he wrote an important work on the Russian army. Greene resigned from the army in 1886 but enlisted in the volunteer army as a colonel in 1898. He was appointed brigadier general in May. In charge of the second expedition to the Philippines, Greene was appointed major general. After the war Greene became the police commissioner of New York City. Cabinet card signed “F.V. Greene Maj. Gen. Vols, Jan 1. 1899” with signed card “F.V. Greene Maj. Gen. Vols” and cover. Mounted, else VG.
