Engraving, “TRAGEDY”, 8-1/2” x 12,” published Dec. 8, 1778 , by John Hamilton Mortimer (1740-79), VG. The engraving depicts a saddened “lady liberty” at the brier of a man. Tragedy was one of 15 engravings produced by Mortimer and dedicated to Sir Joshua Reynolds. Reynolds was a founder and first president of the Royal Academy of Arts, and was knighted by George III in 1769. John Hamilton Mortimer Associate Royal Academy (1740–1779) was a British figure and landscape painter and printmaker, known for romantic paintings set in Italy, works depicting conversations, and works drawn in the 1770s portraying war scenes, similar to those of Salvator Rosa. Mortimer became President of the Society of Artists in 1774, five years before his death, at age 39.
