Manuscript Indenture, 15” x 18”, June 8, 1790, between Notley Young of and State of Maryland and Thomas Beall, George and John Mackall Gantt of the State of Maryland. In small part “... that all the said hands hereby bargained and sold ... shall be agreed on ... within said limits for a Federal City with such streets, squares, parcels and lots as the President of the United States shall approve and that said Thomas Beale ... for the time being approved by virtue of the Act of Congress initiated an act for the establishmenrt of the temporary and permanent Seat of Government of the United States ...” Document has old tape mends, slight missing paper at intersection folds. Still a remarkable item. Within one month of this document, The Residence Act passed. The Residence Act, officially titled "An Act for Establishing the Temporary and Permanent Seat of the Government of the United States," was passed on July 16, 1790, and selected a site on the Potomac River as the permanent capital (Washington, D.C.), in ten years times. Also, this act designated Philadelphia as the temporary capital for a period of ten years. Notley Young was the 3rd largest land owner to sell his plantation to the Federal Government. Young held nearly all the land in the centre of the city and on the river front between Seventh and Eleventh streets.
