Revolutionary War–dated printed broadside, one page, 14.25 x 18.5, March 18, 1782. Broadside issued to the selectmen of Ipswich by Massachusetts Treasurer Henry Gardner, outlining taxes levied via “An Act for apportioning and assessing a Tax of Two Hundred Thousand Pounds.” The act calls for the town to “assess all Male Polls above the Age of Sixteen Years…including Negroes and Molattoes, (and such of them as are under the Government of a Master or Mistress, to be taxed to the said Master or Mistress respectively, in the same Manner as Minors and Apprentices are taxed) at Sixteen Shillings and Eight Pence each.” In very good condition, with small areas of paper loss. An interesting piece considering its allusion to slavery in one of the most ardently abolitionist areas of the country
