Autograph Letter Signed, “Robt. Crist”, to his father, Natchez, Mississippi, November 13, 1859. 3 pp., 7 ¾ x 10 in. In part, “The River is very low and Mr. Brown in is a great hurry. I have 3 men two Irish men and one white man. The niggers are getting the foundation ready and moving the timbers to their place, we will commence raising this week.... There has been one man killed in a fight since, and last night there was a man killed in cold blood yet the[y] say Natchez under the Hill is a very civil place. The denizens of under the Hill used to stop the steam boats—Shoot the captains &c. they think nothing of such things.... A negro ran away a few days ago came into town, he had once been the husband of our washer woman. He came to her and wanted her to keep him and secret him for a while. She told him she could not, he went off and came back at night and cut her three times with a knife, and then left for parts unknown, she is not cut bad. ... The Harpers Ferry case create some excitement here, the free Negroes will have to leave this State unless they have a permit—from the Legislature, it is making blue looking times here for many of them for there is lots of them here. Robert H. Crist (1829-1912) later enlisted in Co. F, 21st Regiment of Indiana Volunteers. The regiment changed in 1863 to the First Indiana Heavy Artillery. On May 25, 1865 he was promoted to the rank of Captain. He is among the Civil War veterans named on the Soldiers Monument in Plainfield, Illinois.
