B, 6th Tennessee Infantry, Columbus, Tenn., Dec. 22, 1861," in part: "…I have been very busy this week working on my house but we have not quite finished…12 of us pitched in about 2 weeks and built a log cabin 16 feet square and we found that we were too much crowded so 5 or 6 of us are building another…Capt. [William M. R.] Johns [later lieutenant colonel] went out on a scouting expedition the other day they have been planting some submarine batteries up the river and the Yankee scouts saw our boats at work and shot at them a time or two but could do them no harm with their muskets…we went up the next day to give them a pop at us but we could not see nor hear nothing of them. We saw where they had been the day before…we had our dinner and muskets and 40 rounds of cartridges with us. It made pretty good load to walk with all day. I use to think hunting squirrels was tiresome but I find hunting Yankees is a good deal the worst…yours, J. W. Key." Also included is the original transmittal cover addressed: "Martin B. Key, Cotton Grove, Tenn." Then in between the address he writes: "The principle portion of the enemy were in full view of our camp." Near fine
