Archive of 8 items pertaining to leading Afrikaner figures in the Boer War of 1899-1902. Included are two Documents Signed by Marthinius Pretorius (1819-1901), first President of the South African Republic, and 4 Documents Signed by Boer statesman, Dr. Willem Leyds (1859-1940). The material included here is variously written in Dutch and English. Of particular interest are the following Autograph Letters Signed "Wm Leyds": 2 pages, octavo, October 28, 1899, Brussels, Belgium to Hamilton Holt, Editor of the "Independent", New York City. Leyds wrote in part: "I beg to acknowledge with many thanks the receipt of your letter of October the 6th asking me to write a short article for your paper explaining to the Americans just what the true situation is..."...Plus; 2 pages, octavo, October 28, 1899, Brussels, Belgium to Edgar Mels, Editor of "The New York Star", New York City. Here Leyds writes in part: "...You say: 'Aided by the Basutos, the Boers will prove a hard proposition'. Nothing would be further from the minds of the Burgers of the Republics, than endeavoring to make use of the Basutos or indeed of any coloured nations as their allies...". Overall Fine condition.
