A great Virginia woman's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Fannie Lorentz "Cabin Home [Shawsville, Montgomery County, Virginia.], April 12, 1862" to her husband "My ever dear Miff," Mifflin Lorentz (1823-1891) a local merchant who did not serve in the army, concerning family news while giving a great account of the wounding and capture of 1st Lieutenant James Henry Langhorne of Co. G, 4th Virginia Infantry at the battle Kernstown, Va., March 23, 1862. Eventually, in August 1862, Langhorne was exchanged for Lt. Nathan C. Bull of the 61st New York. Interestingly, Langhorne was also wounded in action during the battle of First Bull Run and did not survive the war dying on May 31, 1864. He is buried in Shawsville, Va. ... The letter reads, in part: "…Mr. Langhorne got a letter from Jimmie…he was at some Fort in Delleware & was kindly treated, gave an account of his capture. He was shot in his little finger, the ball drove his ring to the bone and also shot in the side which knocked him down. He thought until he got to Winchester it was a mortal wound but I suppose it was slight as he said nothing more about it…I reckon the Yankees thought he was a game chicken. He fought to the last and threw is sword in one of the soldiers face who came up to take him & while lying on his back knocked his pistol in the ground and broke that. I expect he acted bravely. They will send this letter to Old Col. Langhorne…your ever devoted Wife Fannie." VG
