A Confederate officer’s letter written and signed by Frederick L. Childs as Major CSA, Cmmdg Arsenal (Charleston). The 2pp letter is datelined Confederate States Arsenal, Charleston Oct. 24th, 1862. In full, “ I have the honor to state that the “Harbor obstructions” have, during the last summer taken up, and are at present taking up, a great deal of the labor and material (iron) which would otherwise be devoted to this department and I have the honor to request that the Comd’g General will decide whether it is of sufficient importance to be continued at the expense of this department.”
