A Confederate Officer’s letter written by William Lowther Jackson and signed Will, 3pp. legal size, with original cover. The letter is datelined Near Fisher’s Hill not far from Strasburg, August 13, 1862. In part, “We are in line of battle, a large force of the enemy advancing upon us. The fight may soon open or we may fall back tonight. It will be late in the day before the enemy can get position. ... It is now 2pm I skirmished all day yesterday, and at one time was reported to be captured. I understand the report went up to the valley. Four Yankees came right on me and demanded my surrender. My men were not near. I refused. They fired over me several times within ten paces but I escaped. I was not on my horse. Stonewall was grazing and they got between me and him. They got him my saddle bags and pistols but did not get far as four of my men hearing the firing, rushed up, charged and rescued Stonewall etc. It was a very narrow escape. Don’t believe any first reports on me. ... Lorn was painfully but not dangerously wounded in a fight near Sharpsburg after our second crossing. He is now near Harrisonburg doing well. He was wounded in the shoulder, the ball lodging under the arm. No bones broken. He will be well in fifty days. He is a fine soldier. ... On some occasions in passing through places Southern girls in the exuberance of their joy at seeing Rebels, I thought would have permitted a kiss but I was not tempted, and now I do nothing, nor do I talk anything that would give you the slightest pain if you could see or hear. ...”
