A good Southern Citizen's letter, 10pp. 8vo., written by Annie E. Bogart (1830-1906) Washington, N. C., Oct. 19, 1863 to her cousin Sarah M. Bogart of New Brunswick, New Jersey, reading, in small part: "…I thank you…for these beautiful photographs…of my departed cousins…you shall have mine as soon as I am able to procure a good one. We have an artist here who works mostly for the soldiers. I will enquire of his workmanship and if he understands the business well…my cousins James & Robert are thought o be handsome…would not be taken for brothers…tell him, if he has not left home, that I feel proud of him, if he is a Federal officer and fighting against us. I take great pride in exhibiting him to my friends some of whom are great secessionists. He has quite a manly, dignified bearing…Cousin James has a more animated cheerful expression…I feel truly thankful that neither of them have lost their lives in this dreadful war, but trust they may be spared…my two brothers…reside in Greensboro…are urging me…to go up and make them a little visit…I have an inclination to do so provided I can obtain a pass from those in command…passes to this effect are seldom granted but when I bring my complaint if ill health I have no doubt of success. The Col. in command now is quite obliging. Does all in his power to favor the citizens, but it is only through Genl. [John G.] Foster that passes of this kind can be granted…shall meet with a good many of my old acquaintances who are refugees from Eastern Carolina. Most all of them are living in the upper part of the state…will all contribute to make my visit exceedingly pleasant tho' I am not fond of traveling nor of going in crowds…[Commissary Sergeant] John Henry Bogart [61st Virginia POW 11/03/63 & Sailor's Creek, Va. 4/6/65], Uncle Wm's eldest son is in Gen. Lee's army, marched with him into Penn. was at the battle of Gettysburg and has been in most all of the battles in Va., but has never been sick or wounded…had only one furlough since the war began. He has…been promoted to the Commissary department so he has no more marching nor fighting to do and his pay increased…you wish to know if your Southern friends are rebels…we are all warmly attached to the Southern Cause and rejoice in the victories which are won for us by our brave soldiers. You would do the same if you lived at the South. We fell that it is our home and our Country and we love it and are interested in its welfare and ultimate success but…we are not Secessionists, but are for the Southern rights. We have never had that bitter feeling towards the North that great many have but still we do feel that the South has been imposed upon and is perfectly right in trying to defend her homes, her firesides, her property. Situated as we are we must be truly Southern in our principles. All who breath Union sentiments are denounced as traitors to the South…of late our family have taken but little interest in War affairs…and now our greatest desire is Peace on any terms not humiliating to the South. Did you ever see that beautiful little song called "The Banner of the South"? One verse is this "Base wrong the once proud Union mars. Her ensign is a rag. Fell Abolition blots the stars and send twain the Flag." I hope we shall all live to see peace restored but the prospect looks gloomy. The state of affairs has made no difference whatever in my feelings towards my Northern friends. I love them all sincerely…none of our immediate family are in the war except my sister's husband, Mr. Hanks. He is chief engineer on board the C. S. S. North Carolina ironclad now stationed at Wilmington, N. C…the postmaster at Grand Gulf was very hard hearted to refuse such request…Annie E. Bogart…remember me to Cousin Mary…I am sorry to hear that Charlie is in the army exposed to so many dangers. Hope his life may be spared for his sister's sake…A. E. B." Light damp stains, else VG to near fine.
