A good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James McLine [McLein CW data base], Co. B, 1st Alabama Vols., Port Hudson, La., April 29, 1863, in part: "…I have not recd. a line from mother in six weeks or more & I guess it will be longer if it be true in regard to Yankee interceptions of mail routes. There are several reports in camp as to Yankee movements but very little definite. Everything is quiet here…the last rains have proven a great advantage to our battery. It [will] make the sod grow beautifully on our parapets. The lower fleet assented itself last Monday evening & have not reappeared as yet. I learn…that a thousand Yankees were landed above Bayou Sara yesterday & Col. Miller is ordered to pay them a flying visit…I hope Col. will give them what invaders deserve. We are about through the most of our work. I hope we will get some rest; for we have down a good deal of hard work to late. Please say to Wesley that I have found his pass from the Provost Marshal & will preserve it as it may be of some future use…yours respectfully, Jas. McLine, Co. B. 1st Ala."
