An usual war-date Confederate cover enclosing Barton Griffin's annual report for the Alabama & Meridian railroad dated August 21, [1863]. Addressed to Gen. Bocock, as president of the A. & M. RR. Rail Company the reverse of the cover is inscribed with the enumeration of that railroad's gross worth, reading, in part: "Assets & Liabilities as per. Barton Griffin report to stockholders May 1863. Assets 76 miles of road fixtures & equipments at 17,500 per mile 1,330.000. Real estate stock, negroes etc. 50,000. Cash on hand 74,000…Confed. Govt. Loan 10 yrs 150,000. Advance by in 1862 103,181.09. Loan from state of Ala. 156,782.64…balance 187,286.27…indebted to James Tinker for iron…in Apr. 1861…about 28,000 garnishment served before May '62 not yet decided…". The Alabama & Meridian, Miss. railroad was considered a vital link in the Southern railroad system. So much so, that in Dec. 1861, the state of Alabama loaned the company a substantial sum of money to expand its rail lines. Slow progress, though, forced General Baxton Bragg to threaten seizure of the railway in 1862 and even with that progress did not pick up. With his threats ignored the work was completed by a private entity later that year, but then the railway became a target for marauding Union patrols. Overall VG
